Features don’t build loyalty — understanding does. The B2B companies that keep growing have stopped broadcasting and started listening like they actually mean it.

The Evolution of B2B Marketing

Recently, I had an interesting conversation about how B2B marketing has evolved since I wrote “Lead Generation for the Complex Sale” over a decade ago. What fascinates me is how some things have changed dramatically while core principles remain unchanged.

What’s Changed

  • 60% of adults now have smartphones
  • Business and personal lives have merged
  • B2B buyers now buy like consumers
  • Social media has transformed the connection
  • Always-on connectivity is the norm

What Hasn’t Changed

The fundamentals of lead generation remain constant:

  • It’s about building relationships
  • Identifying the right people
  • Creating memorable conversations
  • Nurturing long-term connections

The State of B2B Marketing Today

When I wrote my book, I’d have given the industry a D grade. Today, we’re approaching a C+. That’s progress, but we still have work to do. Consider this: 72% of marketers send leads directly to sales without qualification. No wonder 80% of leads get lost or discarded.

The Problem with Modern Marketing

Here’s what concerns me: Too many companies practice “sociopathic marketing”—focusing on getting what they want at the expense of customer needs. We operate from company logic instead of customer logic.

Signs of Sociopathic Marketing:

  • Prioritizing short-term gains over relationships
  • Focusing on company needs over customer needs
  • Lacking fair value exchange
  • Using manipulation instead of help

The Path Forward: Empathy-Based Marketing

Marketing has a unique opportunity to drive transformation within organizations. While sales typically focus on immediate results, marketing can:

  • Take a longer-term view
  • Build deeper customer understanding
  • Drive organizational change
  • Restore honor to marketing

Key Principles:

  1. Be Interested, Not Interesting
    • Listen first
    • Understand deeply
    • Serve consistently
  2. Focus on Customer Logic
    • Think like your customer
    • Feel what they feel
    • Solve real problems
  3. Build True Value Exchange
    • Help before asking
    • Give before taking
    • Serve authentically

Making it Work in Your Organization

Want to implement empathy-based marketing? Here’s where to start:

1. Get Close to Customers

  • Join sales calls
  • Talk to customers directly
  • Listen to their challenges
  • Understand their world

2. Build Internal Influence

  • Focus on business impact
  • Speak the language of revenue
  • Connect marketing to results
  • Break down silos

3. Develop Essential Skills

  • Practice empathy
  • Build collaborative relationships
  • Learn business metrics
  • Connect across departments

Looking Forward

The future of B2B marketing belongs to those who can truly understand and serve their customers. Recent research shows that 70-80% of buyers believe they discovered their vendors. This tells us something crucial: The best marketing doesn’t feel like marketing.
